INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL (ISS) is a private, Not-for-Profit, non-denominational, grades 6-13, co-educational school providing an International education for middle and high school aged students in Tokyo.
The INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL student body represents many countries, being both native and non-native speakers of English. The medium of instruction is English. Non-native speakers of English are placed in ESL Classes where they work through structured ESL programs that lead to formal qualifications through the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Students also undertake core and elective mainstream subjects and are fully supported in a small classroom environment.
ISS also provides a quality special education program for students who have been formally identified with specific learning challenges.
Applications for the academic year (August-June) are accepted at any time of the year. INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL welcome all families to arrange a school visit by appointment.
Students eligible for admission include students of any nationality residing in the Kanto area and who meet the following criteria:
Native English Speakers with a prior academic record who wish to continue their education in a middle school or high school program.
Non-Native English Speakers who have previously attended an English medium school or who demonstrate English levels accepted by ISS. The students English level is determined after the completion of the ISS ESL diagnostic Test.
ISS Admissions Decisions
Parents are invited to meet with the Principal to receive information about the admissions process and take a tour of the school.
When making admissions decisions, ISS considers the following:
The Student's previous academic background.
The Student's educational profile/psychological reports/evaluations/recommendations.
English Language ability
The Student's required ESL and/or Special Needs support.
All applicants must provide complete and official transcripts or report cards from previous educational institutions.
All applicants must undertake an interview with at least one parent prior to acceptance.
Non-Native Speakers of English must undertake the ISS ESL Diagnostic Test to determine English level. The test will include the assessment of functions, listening, speaking, and vocabulary ability.
The Special Education program allows students with learning differences to engage in middle school and high school academic programs whilst receiving specialized guidance and support. Students who have been identified as having learning differences must demonstrate an ability to undertake a middle school or high school academic program. Applicants with learning differences must provide student evaluations/psychological reports/recommendations. An interview process will allow parents to discuss specific learning needs with Principal. Principal will then determine the school's capability to meet the needs of the student. Students with learning differences will receive the following:
1. Individual Education Plans 2. Academic Counseling 3. Small classroom environment 4. Individual instruction 5. Homework support 6. One-on-One class time 7. Supervised study periods

Families contact ISS -Principal arranges a meeting time with the families.
2.
The families visit ISS and meet with Principal. Families tour the school and observe classes in action.
3.
Families meet with Principal and discuss academic programs.
4.
Families discuss tuition arrangements with Principal and the Business Manager.
Students undertaking a mainstream academic program will not be required to take a test, but an interview will be required. Families meet with Principal or the Special Education Coordinator. Interviews and tests are conducted at this time.

Families provide academic records and other documentation for ISS.
6.
Principal and Special Education Coordinator meet to discuss the academic program of the student.
7.
Families meet with Principal and the Office Administrator to finalize the student's academic program and enrollment.
Note: A 5% consumption tax is included. Goverment institutions are exempt.
